OUR LOCAL AREA
Here in the Cedar City area, our lawns are almost exclusively bluegrass or a bluegrass/fescue mix. Both varieties fall under the “cool-season” turfgrass category, meaning they thrive under the cooler temperatures of spring and fall, and slow their growth during the hot summer months.
So why overseed in fall? The most important reason is that seeding in the fall will maximize your lawn’s root development before the heat of summer arrives. Fall germination allows a head start that will also take advantage of the entire spring growth season. Seeding grass in spring will always require more watering and delicate care due to shallow roots and underdeveloped grass. Additionally, spring seeded lawns must compete against weeds such as crabgrass, and pre-emergent weed control must be postponed until after grass germination.
